Sheri, thanks for the info. I've been wanting to get into aquaponics for a while now. My main purpose is the produce (Lettuce,Spinach,Micros). Tilapia fingerlings are just a supplemental for of income as would be the shrimp/prawns.

Any info on properly breeding the prawns? What prawns are the most profitable?

We want to grow some, but haven't started yet. We're rebuilding our system this spring, so we might do it in the fall, after the summer heat. I can get a post started with what I know. I confess, everything I've learned has been from a local marine biologist here who's working to breed them. Let me find my notes & I'll get something started.

Sheri, might I be able to encourage you to start a Discussion thread somewhere telling us about growing shrimp in the sump?  What kind of fresh water shrimp are you growing?  Can you tell us much about it?

In our neck of the woods fresh water shrimp are raised in the sump rather than directly with the fish. It might depend on the type of shrimp.

Just a thought--If you want to test out tilapia breeding/selling in your area, you can start with a small tank & see what the demand is. It's a small investment, easy to start, and you can grow the business to fit demand. Its less risky than starting big on a gamble. Just be sure to follow local laws.

Yea I expect so.  At least when Friendlies did the prawns they did it under the rafts.

Keep in mind that shrimp and prawns are territorial so it takes quite a bit of space per creature to grow them so don't expect huge harvests per square foot or even square yard of space.

In FL the Giant Tiger Prawns are exotic so you need the aquaculture permit to grow them or at least Miami aquacutlure isn't going to send them to you unless you can show you are "legal."

I don't know much of anything about any other type of shrimp in aquaponics other than maybe ghost or glass or cherry shrimp that I've through about raising as fish feed supplement but I haven't gotten anywhere with that idea yet.

Hey guys.. Whats this that I keep hearing about shrimp being raised along side the tilapia? Any truth to it? Keep both tilapia and shrimp in the same grow out tanks? If anything wouldn't they be better off in the lettuce tanks underneath the rafts?

Honestly, I really  didn't want to catch the huge tilapia that were there. They have huge beds and they look good there. I wanted to catch some of the 6-12oz ones that were there. No luck.
