The aquaculture industry in canada is controlled by a select few ,whom have become entrenched in the last 30 years ,setting up laws and rules to protect the selected few .

Ask me I know, having been in court for app 3 years ,and having raised a top genetic breed directly from egypt  for over 10 years .

Its difficult because these suppliers have paid 20-30k for their brood stock..

second, the government wont allow them to sell these fish to just anyone. its complicated! I brought my tilapia in from the US in December legally, and now its technically illegal to bring them over unless you are licensed. if they catch you bringing tilapia in from the US they will take your car away, and possibly face hefty fines. welcome to Russia! ugg.. I mean Canada!

Hi everyone; Can anybody out there tell me why it's so difficult to obtain breeding pairs of tilapia in Ontario? Is it because the suppliers view us as potential competition? I just don't understand it. Can anyone enlighten me?

Hello, I'm new here, have an aquaponics set-up going in my greenhouse. Am trying to source tilapia but no luck. Besides goldfish, what are others out there using? If I have no luck sourcing tilapia, I may have to use trout, but my tank is a tad small.

I joined the walleye group, but I think they are in the states.  I was thinking about doing rainbow trout, but walleye would be great as well.  I wonder if there are any issues of them eating eachother.

Hi all - Glad I found this site - just joined!! I'm looking into starting a small aquaponics operation in Ontario.  are there any weekend courses in Ontario similar to that offered in Milwaukee by Growing Power?
