Gillian, what do people catch in your area in the streams and lakes? That is a good place to start. We live in trout country and yup, trout have done the best for us by far over catfish and bluegills and even goldfish. Ask around your area and also see if there are any fish farms as that will not only tell you which fish but also avoid shipping. We get our trout fingerlings just 1/2 hr away from here.
Jeff, I don't need to worry about the fish dying?
Where is a good link to see which fish are best for SC? I am planning on starting with Gold fish or something "durable"
Wow, I would not even subject my trout to those temps. Your system won't ever get started until you can maintain at least 50F in my experience and certainly nothing will grow.
My GH hit 85F today while the outside temps are in the 20's and still things are slow because the water is hovering at or just below 50F. You are fighting an uphill battle for sure. Sounds like there is a GH and heat source in your future if you plan on growing year round.
If you can keep your tank from freezing you can add the fish any time. They will take care of your lack of ammonia. Everything will begin to work pretty much on it's own.
have been cycling since October, i know right before cold weather, but i do not want to get fish until i get this science part down. I bought maxi crop so I could begin growing veggies. Well my stale and beets started strong and my son got on the GB and messed with the spinach. Any ways, i am pretty sure this past week killed my kale (my tank froze). BUt I do not have ammonia present, and my ph is still quite high. 7.6or higher. When is it safe to get fish? Ought I start adding ammonia?
Exactly what i was thinking logicalhydro, thank you
Hi LogicalHydro, was thinking about some ornamental plants with this set up first to see how i get on and then look at building complete seperate system for growing herbs/veg what do you think ?
Hi Jeff sullivan
Thank you thats really helpful, my concern was the switch over and how it would affect my fish but that makes loads of sense !
