My beds will 12” deep so this puts the water at 10” 2” from the top I wanted the math at the full 12” depth. I have two 330 IBC plumbed with 11/2 going into 55gal barrel swirl filter then into 55 gal barrels bio- filter and two 70 gal cattle tubs for sumps. I guess I will plumb in the second tub to make it 140 gal as I thought when I got the great deal on them. I will have a dwc 3' x12' I'm not concerned about that just the drainage of the beds. Work in progress if it overflows then I go bigger it's outside so no harm I will have to have a switch on the pump so I don't burn it up.

Tetsuzan, I have a small size AP system - 275 gal IBC ft and a 100+ gal sump.  with two grow beds 2x8 and 4x4.  I use a radial filter before the water goes into my grow beds which takes out most of the big "particles' I then added red wriggler worms to the grow beds they will eat up any extra poop that gets through as well as clean the roots and create worm castings which the plants also thrive on.  I would be more worried about virus or pathogens getting into the system and killing the fish, I've never heard of Ecoli getting into an AP system as that is from warm blooded animals (cows), fish are cold blooded so you don't get those risks.

Someone sent me this question today:

Question with bacteria e coli with regards to aquaponics.  I was asked the question to food safety due to animal waste of the fish and worms. why is there not a safety issue of Ecoli bacteria on the plants and fish.

Could you please point me in a direction to find  the answer.

Anthony-

One gallon takes up 231 cubic inches, or 0.133681 cubic feet. (And it weighs 8.3 pounds.) So 30 cubic feet @ 70% = 21; 21 / 0.133681 gives 157 gallons, minus the 2 dry inches, and you wind up with a working figure around 150 gals.

Rubbermaid has stock tanks at 70, 100, 150, and 330 gallons that might work for you.

Hope that helps.

Anthony, I figure the media takes up 50% so 30 cubic feet (2 media filled GBs) = 225gal. I used a 275g ibc for the sump and would have used a 330 but none around when I needed them. ALSO the more your GBs are divided up (we have 5 IBC right now at 12" media depth which equal 15cf or about 100gal each) the less the chance they will ever all drain dry at once. (Raft beds have no effect as they never drain) How have you made your GBs and how deep will the media be? Don't forget the water should stay 2" under the surface so that reduces the gals as well. 70 gal sounds a bit short.

HI Guys, I'm making my grow beds, now my question is, when I put my sump in do I make it the same cubic feet as the grow beds? I'm thinking that about 60- 75% is going to be taken up by media displacement, but not quite sure what size to make the sump so it dose not overflow. I had and idea that a 70 gallon cattle tub would work. Think of some number not adjusting for displacement my 30 cubic feet grow beds will over flow it or not. I think that if both the beds hit that drain time at the same time will it take it. Does any one know how many cubic inches a gallon is. I guess I just build it and fit it if need be but would like in put from the gurus of the aquaponic world.

Every state is different.

Here in TN I am told to just hang on to your receipt when you purchase fish, in our case trout from a local trout farm. Unless you are going commercial the rules are often very different from backyard hobbyist. Perhaps ask a local Ranger.

Catching in local lakes and transporting home is completely illegal here and most other places (although it is done all the time). The main reason is they don't want them going into other lakes which are under strict control but an AP IBC or the like was not even contemplated when those rules were set up.

Southern States Supply will bring them (pond fish) right to your door in quantity or you can pick up what you want on certain days of the month here. They also have great deals on seed although in pretty large quantities. They too would know your state's rules and Gillian, you must have a Southern States Farm Supply near you down there. Just click on the name above for their store locator.

I found the info in the fish and wildlife under "stocking farm ponds" there was a subsection for approved venders and transport permits.

Insert appropriate State here (Wisconsin) Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection, Division of Animal Health

And do a google search for

"New fish farm registration application"

The same Department also may require you to register your land in the livestock register

Google for it with the phrase below

“Livestock Premises Registry Application”

Hopefully you don’t have to register in your state, here in Wisconsin we do.  We need the livestock registry number first before we can get the fish farm permit.  Better safe than sorry.
