You bet I do. Also before I forget you should use the much less expensive "thinwall" pipe whenever possible. It has a larger inner diameter and is more than adequate for our purposes. The only size I have not found at Lowes in thinwall  from 3/4" to 4" is 2". All other sizes are available. Some Lowes are "B" stores and don't have everything so ask them where their "A" stores are located in your area. I too like the best bang for my buck.

Butch, That being said I'd recommend ordering one of Jim's siphons. It only costs a little more but will save you headaches trying to make your DYI siphon work properly.

@ Jim Thanks for the valuable information. I'm sure you know how much time wasted on  trying to figure it out. sometimes it cost more being cheap and I guess you can say it's part of the learning process.

Here is just one example of a 3/4" siphon we call our Mini.I just happened to use the flared end of the 3" pipe on this one but that is not necessary. Note the "O"ring goes below the growbed and against the female electrical TA (threaded adapter). Be sure and use a SS screw for the knob. The knob makes it easy to remove the bell so the gravel guard can be kept small and take up less grow space. Going back to bed now

Butch, I don't see where you told us the size of your grow bed. I can give you the specs for the siphon based upon depth of your media and overall size of the bed's dimensions. For example on our IBC GBs with 14" sides and 12" deep media we use 1" pipe that starts (makes) at around 10" (my design is adjustable for seedlings and seeds, etc) and stops (breaks) at 1". For half 55gal drums (Barrelponics) we use 3/4" pipe, etc. so it depends upon how much water volume you are moving and the depth of your media.

Butch, all you have to do is use a male plumbing threaded adapter and a female 3/4" electrical threaded adapter and an "O"ring which goes under the GB . Lowes numbers are 23856 in plumbing and 115915 in electrical and 198977 in plumbing for the "O" ring. I have sold well over 500 siphons all over the world so believe me as long as your grow bed is1/4" or thinner material and you drill a clean 1" hole you will be all set. Check out my photos for siphon designs.

@ Leo since I have not have a chance to check out what you recommended. I'm using 3/4 pipes so obviously I'll have to use male/female adapter for this size of pipe. Am I still going to need the use of washers to be leak proof ? What size hole am I going to need to make on the grow bed to fit the 3/4 male/female adapter ?

just trying to save some time looking around if I know what exactly I'm going to need because the looking around is the biggest time wasted for me on this test project.

@ Jeff S. I'll def use aussieglobe seems reasonable. right now I'm building a test system. sop do you just get the 3/4 UNiseal and stick the 3/4 PVC into it or you use some kind of a coupling or even an elbow. if using a coupling or elbow U guess I'm going to need LARGER than a 3/4 uniseal. is that about right. what exact configuration do you use and what size ?

Comment by Butch Pornebo on October 2, 2014 at 11:20pm

I was just going to settle by using a rubber grommet and slipping in a coupling BUT it does NOT look it's going to hold up for a long time.

thanks everyone for the suggestion. the wasted hours and hours and hours.... in Home Depot, Lowes and Ace Hardware just to figure out the cheap way...... so frustrated over the last few days. but I'm not giving up. trying my best to get it to work.
