Goodmorning all! New to aquaponics and am looking for a "start here" section.
My 14y/o son and I have started a system in the greenhouse. A 55gl tank w/ goldfish. I have linked 4 small tubs together and a small water pump coming up from the tank. They are half filled with fish gravel. I have a bunch of vegies ready to plant and more fill. I am a bit hesitant. I dont want to kill all my plants due to lack of knowledge. Any suggestions for the newbie?? Thank you!

What to use for ammonia. You may be able to find a Jug of clean (no soap, fragrance or detergent added) ammonia at Ace Hardware.
Or you might bottle your own free Humonia if that doesn't gross you or the family out.
Or you can order ammonium Chloride from me or I believe Sylvia has cycle up packets of something to sell.

I'm looking to begin cycling my system this weekend. What would you suggest to introduce ammonia into my system to begin the process? I'm open to suggestions.

We started out big for the first time... System doing OK... Our bell siphon is not quite right on time.. And we need more fish.. I have lots of questions 2 ask .. But busy at work right now.. Thanks for all the support so far. :-)

Another thing I like about that venturi design is that it works if you are pumping water. It cannot break down.

Phil, thanks for the Venturi suggestion. I found some good info on YouTube and intend to pickup some fittings today to try it out. I have a good air pump, but with this new aeration plan for the FT I can save the air pump for my future DWC.
My FT water does exchange a little more than twice an hour, so hopefully I will continue to have good health conditions for my scaredy cats.

Hi Andrei - It is gravity fed in the discharge from the veggie grow box that goes back into the fish tank. Nothing more than a high school lab experiment of ole Giovanni Venturi's principal - Father LaMatt, SJ would be proud of me.
I will draw up the schematic this afternoon as a .PDF. Send me your email address to phil@jobexpousa.com and I will send you the .PDF. The great thing about it is that it does not require an air pump.
As I said, lots of water exchanges and excellent aeration is, I believe, 2 of the major contributors to fish health.
