Hi, I have a problem with some bugs and little worms eating my plants, is there a pesticide safe for the fish and the plants. I know aquatic eco systems sells something in there aquaponic section, but not sure if it is safe. If somebody can help or recommend something would be very much help. Thanks DJ

The best rule of thumb is 12" of media minimum.  2" for a dry layer at the top, 8" of root space, and another 2" for the solids to build up at the bottom. The bottom layer adds to the bacteria and stability of the system.

We did a shorter bed for a year, and as the solids built up, the root space dwindled and we experienced clogged roots. It became more problematic as time went by. We weren't as fortunate as Debra. :)

That depends o.o
What plants do you plan on growing? Generally, about a foot deep is best to cover most plant needs, but I've gotten away with just six inches for several seasons now.

what is the ideal depth for a gravel grow bed?

will all that rain negatively affect the system? Like depleting the bacteria in the rocks?

I never could understand why with all the areas of our nation that flood like the NE in the spring and the SE during the summer months why we could never find a way to capture that water and create some sort of pipeline to get it to the SW. Seems like a waste.

I'll email you all you want! Two thing that are vital in Az., water and A/C.

John, send some our way. AZ is always dry, but this year in particular. We'd love some nice fresh rainwater. We'll be happy to trade for some sunshine!

Still raining in Fla this morning. I have been bailing water out of our system for 3 days now. No doubt more than 250 gallons, 20-30 gallons at a time, from the sump tank. I awoke this morning to the sump overflowing. No big deal, but I don't like the drains from the beds underwater. Our IBC rain barrel overflowith.
