Butch-
There are no stupid questions but one not asked. There is always someone here that will be able to give an answer. We are good people and are here to help.
@ Leo Nope. won't give up. hope you guys don't mind answering a ton of stupid questions from me.
Jim-
Glad you are doing better, and that you had someone to help you when you are down. I'll keep you up in smoke for a rapid recovery.
@Butch-
Good info here on this thread, take the advice from Vlad and run a constant flood system, be concerned with getting your system running properly and not so much with the veggies at this point. Keeping your fish alive through the cold season should be the number one concern. Don't give up and read, study and put into practice that research you find.
@Jim glad that all went well for you. if nothing else all we got is better health
@vlad. makes sense. once the bed is drained and the time it gets filled up again, the media will have some time for the temp to drop.
Heres some stuff on sizing tank heaters that may be useful to someone...
Yeah, welcome back Jim. Glad your ok, and were able to positively diagnose them Lyme disease to boot.
@Butch, you can also conserve some of that 'water heat' by running you system in a constant flood scenario instead of flood and drain. Flood and drain in the winter basically turns your grow bed into one big cold sink.
Welcome back Jim. Glad all went well and your fish didn't die lol.
For those wondering where the "H" I went I had an emergency appendectomy at 2am 10 days ago and live to tell about it. Got to my goal weight of 165 from 175 in 5 days but I don't recommend it:-) My wife took over the AP GH and all went well so make sure your loved ones know how to op your system should an emergency arrive at your door step.
Big plus of it all: my hip pain that was getting worse day by day (farm related accident a year ago) went away with my second Amoxicillin which nails it as Lyme disease so I will continue therapy on that. Nice plus! and nice to be back.
fortunately for me the temp here does not go that low. I just check google and the lowest temp in Sacramento on 2013 was 19F (typically 37F) and hottest was 104F (typically 89F). Considering budget and other factors, I decided to opt for now a 200 watt heater and a hoop house over the grow bed.
Hey folks- as the cold weather closes in, there is a trove of ideas on cold weather aquaponics over at http://www.frostyfish.com. Jeremiah is an energy conservation engineer in his "day" job and knows what he is talking about. He also has kits for thermostat controllers (with GFCI) and heaters. Lots of common sense stuff, but also more than a few things I sure didn't think about - like controlling evaporation and humidity. Check it out.
Heaters: IMHO, better to opt for a larger one, or even two small ones. But remember that aquarium heaters can't be accurately set to hold lower temps like 55.
