Butch- Buy this stuff and be done with it: http://www.theaquaponicstore.com/AquaUp-pH-Raising-Kit-1lb-p/awcas0...
so here is the ingredient list for Chemstar Type S Lime
Calcium Hydroxide Ca(OH)2 Portlandite > 50% 1305-62-0
Magnesium Hydroxide Mg(OH)2 Brucite > 35%
Magnesium Oxide MgO Periclase < 3%
Calcium Carbonate CaCO3 Limestone < 3%
Crystalline Silica SiO2 Quartz < 1%
is Type S Lime (Hydrated Lime Chemstar brand) can be used to raise ph safely ?
that's an option Jeff. maybe use some feeder goldfish of sorts BUT I'm really inclined of doing fishless for now and see how it goes.
It's time for some fish! You could use some sacrificial fish or I would just put in whatever fish you plan to rise. I think you'll be fine...... but I'm no expert.
related to my previous comments. Am I cycled yet ?
good nes of sorts. first, thanks for the infos . I did get my ph up the following day. still need to find some hydrated lime instead of using baking soda BUT CAN NOT get myself to pay $10 for 10lb when all I really need is prolly less than 1/2 lb.
anyway if you guys recall I'm doing fishless cycling and over estimated the amount of ammonia source which spiked the level between 4-8 if not over 8. Then over the course of t2.5 weeks Nitrite start showing up and peaking between 2-5 and ammonia staying steady at 4.0. Did NOT change water BUT added 2x due to water evaporation.
today 3.5 weeks after PH @ 6.8, Ammonia @ 0.25, Nitrite @ 0.25 AND Nitrate @ between 10-20. This is the 1st time I tested for Nitrate.
what now ?
Do I wait until my ammonia and/or nitrite goes to 0 before adding some ammonia source ?
I want to maintain my NITRATE between 40 and 80.
Do I add enough ammonia source to get it to 2.0 and keep it at 2.0 until I get my NITRATE between 40-80 ?
For ammonia maintenance level, only add ammonia if NITRATE deeps below 40 ?
Thanks in advance.
24 hour wait after adding potassium bicarbonate to see the effect on PH before adding 50% more if the initial dosage was not enough ?
baking soda in a pinch coz I can get it right now while potassium bicarbonate I need to look around and if I end up ordering online it might take at least a week.
on baking soda, same dosage ?
I'd start with 3 teaspoons per 100 gallons. Observe and pay attention to what that does, because precise dosing and their effects will be determined largely by specific water quality parameters unique to your area.
But it would be hard to go wrong with 3 tsps per 100 gallons for starters...
The sooner the better, but don't freak out or anything like that...You could use sodium bicarbonate (baking soda...NOT baking powder) "in a pinch", but I really wouldn't recommended doing that (baking soda) any more than as a 'one time' only type deal...or you may risk causing yourself potential problems later on down the line...
