The Door is Opening... aquaponics is the teaser!

Posted on August 31, 2010 at 9:11am 5 Comments

It's surprising to me how often the answer is "aquaponics"....

Following the start of the first day of kindergarden for my granddaughter, I attended the "meet & greet" session in the multipurpose room with the new principal. In introducing himself he announced that he was looking for feedback on creating a theme for the school direction & curriculum. I had already noted that a school garden was listed by several parents, for a school project.…

The Industrial Agricultural Model should be Renamed: Agricultural Liquidation!

Posted on August 29, 2010 at 11:59pm 2 Comments

An outstanding short presentation illuminates the insanity of our current agricultural model... and a place where it's done differently.

Dan Barber, a well known chef, was presenting his talk on TED (Technology, Education, & Design), in response to a problem chef's are having to confront, "How to keep fish on the menu!". With the oceans now depleted of 90% (yes, 90%) of the fish we used to harvest from them, finding something to serve is no longer a…

The "Ivory Tower" vrs Real World Realities

Sylvia commented: "You are pointing out a frightening disconnect between our industrial food providers and what some of us know to be both the best solution for the planet and for our bodies...or shall I say yet another frightening disconnect. "

I think that was one of the scariest aspects; realizing that this broad group of dedicated…

Hi Amy,
I am new to aquaponics - have a new system that is about 6 weeks old now, I think. Using just goldfish... trying to figure out a source for other types of fish. I am sort of near you-just north of ukiah in Redwood Valley-which is why I'm sending you a comment ;-) Got excited to see that someone *local* was involved! - Lori

Profile Information

How did you find us?
looking for others interested in AquaPonics; we're located an hour above San Francisco
Are you an aquaponic gardener already?
proof of concept only, so far
If so, what type of system? (pick all that apply)
We put together a proof concept system and it worked beautifully! We have moved and am getting ready to put together a long term system! Before we have just jumped in with both feet but this time we're more serious and would like to have a productive system to use as an example for our community and schools.
Please tell us something else about yourself.
We are developing a sustainable homestead and want to add fish/shrimp to the mix. Currently we raise heritage pork, miniature/compact grass-fed beef (lowline angus) and old world jersey milking cows (again, very compact) heritage breed as well as chickens, turkeys, guineas, etc.

We have a nice sized organic garden and work a bit with season extensions (cover, hoophouse).

We also raise miniature horses and are working on teaching them to pull (pull a buggy, cart, etc).
