Muscovies make good mommies but I don't think I would grow them for eggs. I've heard people say that indian runner ducks are good egg layers if you like duck eggs.

However, muscovies are supposed to be very good at fending for themselves which makes them good for a free range situation where minimal supplemental feed is provided. I don't know how true this is though as we have always provided plenty of free choices commercial feed as well as lots of space for them to forage. They do love BSF larva though.

Well if you ever decide you want to raise birds for meat, I recommend Muscovy Ducks as they breed well and mine have been very good at raising young. However, Don't get them if you don't want to eat them as they are likely to overpopulate otherwise.

Lots of animals do make it more difficult to travel so definitely avoid the milk goats if you still want to travel much since they would require lots of personal attention to keep them used to being milked.

It is kinda a pain for us since we do travel a lot and the eggs and feeders need some one to check daily.

The trick is to set up the systems and everything so that it will be easy for a neighbor to check on. (Don't expect a neighbor to clean any filters, design the systems so that all that needs doing is to see that the pump is running, there is feed in the feeder and no dead fish floating.)
