I live in Orlando.
I have a lazy mans Aquaponics system I've been running for quite some time. I use a swirl filter and it is helpful for filtering gunk.

Using a radial flow filter or a swirl filter between the fish tank and the grow beds can remove most of the larger solids, but still allow the nutrients from the fish tank to be delivered to the grow beds. You can get some good direction on how to construct those filters on YouTube. Rob Bob has a good one there, but there are others.

John I was given the 4 boxes. They had copper tubing for re-tubing a large Carrier water chiller. They were made of wood so I covered them.
How about if I use a bio-filter to catch all the solids. I was told that the filter would help the beds by keeping the poop out of the beds and still send the water with its food for the plants. I'm just getting into this and I have read that you can use a filter or not ? Rik The beds are 9 inch's wide. Do you think the beds will clog up? Are you in Florida? If so where? I live on the central east coast near Kennedy Space center. I'm just starting and need to learn a whole lot more. I have a 325 gal fish tank and a 325 gal sump tank feeding my beds that are 17 feet by 9 inch's by 10 inch's. Will this work? Thanks Robbie PS how do I join groups?

Robbee, lava rock is an excellent media, theoretically. Due to its porous nature the nitrification process is enhanced because there is so much more surface area for the bacteria to attach to. I would suggest, if you use it in your beds, that you keep one of those little rakes handy. It wold be really rough on your hands otherwise. I do think that those pores would become clogged with biomass after a while. I have never used it and would not consider its use. Just sayin. I have used pea gravel successfully for years now and it is easy to come by from landscape suppliers.
I am curious though, how did you come up with 9" x 10" x 17' beds?
