A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hey I'm in northern California where we are falling victim to geo-engineering and the drought.  Plus neonicotinoids seem to have really taken a toll on the bees this year,  I mean I see about 10% of what I saw last year.  How's mother natures health in your neck of the woods?  I feel like we may have tried to fool mom for the last time and ended up killing her.

Hey Bob, I am here in Carmichael and as you know this heat is ridiculous.  The heat is making everyone water more, that scares me.  I started my own bees a few years back because I noticed my cherries were not getting pollinated very well. I use the top bar hive method in which I pretty much leave them to their own devices and they are thriving and healthy.

I have been meaning to get some water collection systems going and that will be happening sooner than I thought so I can keep up my gardens. All I need now is a little rain. Ha, Ha!

How is the evaporation on your system with this heat?

I imagine this is old news to everyone in Arizona?

@Janet Little

Yeah the transpiration is very strong with this heat.  I just posted a video about water use in a recirculating hydroponic system where they is very little area for evaporation.

It's amazing how much water is used.   I've thought about rain water collection, but storage does not seem very practical.  Permacultuture may work better where the water is stored in the soil.  I built a hugelkulture bed last year and it will take a year or two more to begin to work, but I have hope that I will be able to go well into summer and maybe all the way through without watering.

I've been afraid I'd fail at bees.  Is it easy?

Yes bees are easy, I am a total beginner.  I would be happy to show you my bees, give you some free plans to build a top bar hive and show you how to wrangle you bees free in the spring.  I made my hive out of scrap lumber from my yard.

Dennis at GardenPool has an intriquing way to harvest more than just rainwater.  He has a metal roof that collects condensation during at least part of the year.  His system is a little under 7,000 gallons and he just dumps the rainwater collected from his roof into the AP system.  He says he collects around 15,000 gallons a year.  Check it out:
