I have been experimenting with solar lights to help feed the fish at night.  Has anyone else been doing this?  So far it seems to be working.  My wife has been putting pictures of my set up on her web site.  She has it all stored in the "Man Cave".  I would love to hear some comments...

Why would you need to feed them at night.

not so much that they need feeding at night  but at night is when you can get free natural feed by knocking bugs into the water at night.

I hang a bug zapper over some of my tanks.

What about mosquito larvae? Do the fish eat them? I cover my tank at night so no predators can get in, especially raccoons.

Many types of fish will eat mosquito larva, though adult mosquitoes will rarely lay eggs in moving water so if there is much aeration or flow, it is likely the skeeters can't land to lay their eggs to feed your fish directly.

@Michael, here's a low tech solution--hang a bug zapper as TCLynx suggested and use some left-over PVC (we all have some--we just have to look hard enough ) to create a trench for the zapped bugs to go to a piece of pottery, or a flower vase, so you can feed the bugs to the fish in the morning. (Note: I have not tried this myself--read with caution.)

I thought of doing the same thing, but I want to try to keep the electricty to a minimum.  When I see my power consumption rates I will probably go for it.

Bug zappers are not especially high wattage, I usually put mine on one of those timers that turns it on at dusk and off again several hours later.

I too hung a bug zapper over my pond.  I removed it when i noticed how many beneficial bugs were being killed.

Bug zappers kill night pollinators, moths.

Well, ya gotta weigh the pros and cons, while some moths may be pollinators for some types of plants (you might want to research what pollinators are needed for what you are growing) moths and butterflies also lay eggs that turn into caterpillars that eat many veggie plants.  So ya gotta make a choice.

Yes you do and my plants aren't the only plants around that need pollinating.  To each his own but I won't use a zapper.  I've known people who had to hand pollinate certain night blooming plants due to low moth populations.

Which night blooming plants are you growing?
