Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

So I'm a student at Drexel University in Philadelphia.  My school pays a few hundred thousand dollars a year to give us access to all literature and books available in the world.  To an individual, this stuff would cost $1,000's because you often have to pay to get access to scientific journals and other literature.

Tonight I searched and even requested articles that I couldnt download, for literature on aquaponics, everything from reviews to scientific experiments and economic reviews.

I hope the following articles are helpful.

Long live the Age of Information.

Mathew, you do realize that just about everything (if in fact not everything) that Sean has linked, is already available on the net... for free...in it's entirety...About as exciting as removing the "Do Not Remove this Tag" tag from your mattress...

Go ahead try it, just Google any of the titles he linked. It's all there already.

Nothing 'special' about any of those links...Now if he could link something like :

Fish Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment by Edward J. Noga: Diagnosis and Treatment

Now, that would be something mighty fine...

Sean, the legal reality is that if you don't have permission from the author to publish that book excerpt or it was published by them publicly it is copywrite infringement. Were did it come from?

if it's a legal problem, just simply remove it,   i requested that the chapter be sent to me by my library.  they found the book, photocopied it and e-mailed it to me.

If it was sent to you by your library, Sean, that is good enough for me.

So if I photocopy your book from the library and post it its okay?

Well, it's a conundrum for me, Matt.  My quick answer to that is that it would, of course, not be ok with me because I didn't give permission for my work to be distributed for free.  I actually thought of that case when I posted.  I think the best thing to do is to contact Dr. Rakocy, the author, and ask him how he feels about it being posted here. I will do that now...

But in general if there is any question, just ask the author if they are ok with it.  Most will say 'yes', as long as there is proper attribution.

Agreed.  And let me point out my position is not to bash you all, but to protect the authors.  I wish all information could be free, but then again it cost a lot of money to come up with the information that we are talking about.  I see where Sean is coming from and he is trying to help.  Vlad point is well taken too.  But to argue the point, most of Metallica's music is freely available on the internet, yet there are a few well known cases involving that group that points of they are not okay with it.  My point in the beginning is that this is a liability that may come back to bite the site.  Perhaps it will not be Rackocy that is upset, perhaps it's another paper or book.  Also this was pointed out to me very quietly by people associated with/know Dr. Rakocy.  I personally have not had the pleasure of shaking his hand yet.  I am unsure if they sent word to him, but those who spoke with me said they would be "mad as hell" if someone put their work up like that.  I am a little louder than most, so I made the public comments.

I love this site.  I only wanted to protect it.

Matt, I never took offense nor did I think for a moment that you were trying to "bash" me.  Rather I took is as you are trying to protect author's right to their intellectual property and for that I am grateful.  I'm really torn on this.  As an author it would piss me off to no end to have my hard work stolen.  But as a huge believer in open source development and online communities I love the availability of information on the net. I think the line should be drawn with permission, and if Dr. R. gives his ok then we will keep it up, and if not it goes down.  You were right in questioning me, Matt.  I honestly didn't put enough thought into my first response and your pushing is getting us to the right solution here.  Do you agree?

Just heard back from Dr. Rakocy and here is what he said "Hi Sylvia, The copyright to that chapter belongs to Mike Timmons and James Ebeling and I do not believe they would agree to it being passed around on the Internet as a stand alone chapter."

Based on this I've deleted the PDF of the Aquaponics chapter from the Recirculating Aquaculture book from this site.

Sylvia, thanks for seeing this through.  You are in a unqiue postion where your were able to see both sides of the coin.  Thanks for the leg work and fixing the problem.

Sean, I meant no malice to you, I just want to protect those of us who publish for a living.  Very few understand how much of our careers are based upon publishing.  We have to pay to belong to societies to get published, so at the least those seeking that specific information should be willing to pay to access it.

Noga's book is worth every penny.  Just buy it used and realize that 150 bucks is not very much to pay someone for years of work.
