Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Just looked over Cord Parmenter's greenhouse designs. Years ago I read of a similar idea being used in passive solar heating except that instead of black barrels there was a Wall of Fish. Thick clear glass held in hundreds of gallons of water with fish clearly visible from each side. Wondered if anyone has tried this in their greenhouse design?

Hello Paul,

I too have read about this and numerous other designs for passive solar heating, a lot of them in the book and work by John Todd of The New Alchemists. Although this is not the book that I had read a lot of this in ( I believe it was one written by his wife, I will share that later). Here is a link to one interesting article which will shed some more light about what I am referring to.

Oh! Interesting fact that I noted was that they had started to experiment in growing algae and then leafy vegetables such as lettuce to feed the fish (Tilapia). This was in the 1960s / 1970s, so to me, this was the rediscovery of Aquaponics although it was not acknowledged as such. There are photos of such in the book I am referring ..I will post details later. I am sure that Mike Cosmo, who I believe worked with this wonderful organization at one time, may be able to shad more light on this :-)

We called it Solar Aquaculture.  Aquaponics.   I have posed pictures of the Ark and even how it looks and works today. I suggest you follow up on the work being done there and look at what I have posed.  The wheel turns.

Here you are Paul,

Not sure how you would control the algae bloom in such a concept. Sunlight also kills Nitrite bacteria.
