Day spent doing in the ducks

There is something to be said about knowing how your food comes to be your food. This step does turn some people vegetarian.

Today was a day for moving some of our ducks into new quarters in the freezer. That is right we were killing today. Killing one's own food does bring a closer connection to the whole process.

It does seem the closer the animal is to us, the harder the process can be. Most of us think nothing about harvesting a plant to eat even through that harvest is often killing the plant or at least cutting part of the plant off. And then few people have too much trouble killing a fish to eat. This does make aquaponics a very good step along the path of responsible food husbandry.

Killing a duck or a chicken is a step more difficult than fish I would say. It isn't meant to be easy though. It should be profound because the animal is giving it's life to support you and your family and we give thanks for that.

Between catching birds for processing, I did manage to get the 300 gallon fitted with it's tower plumbing.
