Im a 4H advisor and teach folks about the benefits of keeping backyard poultry. Also the founder of Southwestern Ohio Backyard poultry. I'm an urban farmer raising meat chickens layers ,quail and rabbits along with raised beds and regular good old dirt farming. I'm in the process of trying to get an aquaponic system started at my kids school they have a nice green house that hasn't been used for 10 years and is in need of some help but working on that now. My goal is to have one 750 gal tank with perch and several grow beds to get started. Since I have to fund this project myself its going to take a little while to get it going but I see it happening this year.

Things I learned

Posted on July 23, 2011 at 7:30am 0 Comments

Well this year for me my was all about learning and trying new things. First off Im very happy with the results of my hard work. My tank and grow bed setup has worked well but I can see why having min of 12" grow bed is better than 8". A  lot of my plants got to top heavy with fruit and fell over using stakes has helped but you need the deeper bed to hold the stake. But I got mine to work using my porch railing to hold the plants. I got my system up and running faster by…

Well after all the work put fourth I'm sad to announce the school doesn't want to move forward with the program at this time. At least I was able to open their eyes to what can be done at the school.

Ready! Set! Go!... ok not so fast

Ready! Set! Go!... ok not so fast. Update on the green house Today had another meeting at the school with several people. Facilities Maintenance, Biology Teacher, Principal and consultant. It was in the high 20's today so we walked out to the poor snow covered greenhouse to discuss what we needed to do to get it up and running.   Well the Maintenance guy named everything it needed (a lot) but I think we can get it up and running in a week or so. I smiled because we both know its going to…

Nick, raise the temp in your tank to 83 and give it a dose of salt to 3ppm and that should kill the ick and leave you bact.

Awesome. -I am jealous! (It's been so long since I incubated -I miss it)

Would you have hatching eggs available that I wouldn't have to send away for? That would help me out!     Where do you keep your quail and whatnot? I saw your rabbit was in the basement and I knew the quail were at one time. You were telling me at that swap and at the time I had young quail in my basement. I had most of them in a dove aviary on the back of my house and now in a trailer I baught from Buckley Bros. along with doves and chickens. I am in town and really praying to be out in the country soon. I have been developing layer cages for quail (if you'd be interested or had any input). working on feeder designs too as I have not seen any out that work quite like mine and the birds can't poop in.

We thought about rabbits when we have tilapia. I forget did you have tilapia or even know where they were available? Sorry about all the questions I am just really excited about all this and no one around seems to understand, All of a sudden I realize someone in close proximity does. Forgive my eagerness! -Adam

Nick - please tell your friend that we'd love to have her tour Sweet Water!  On SW's website there is information on our regular tours (Wednesdays and Sundays) and about any other special tours (including some this weekend) we might have scheduled.

Welcome Nick,

Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community!  I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics.  There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions.  Everyone is quite happy to help out new members – no question is too basic.

A great place to start is to read the “How to Use This Site” link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Main page.  You might also find the “Aquaponic Gardening Rules of Thumb” guidelines helpful.

Please participate and check in with us every day!  Weare constantly posting news about aquaponics and the good food movement.

Thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to gettingto know you and hearing about the progress on your school project.  Many of us think there are true synergies between backyard chickens and raising fish through aquaponics.
