A geared motor would work well and your power consumption would be minimal as well as the rotating speed would be just enough to keep it constantly moving.

Some of the small geared motors with little transmission boxes built on them can move hundreds of pounds at very little amperage, 1 that'll move a few thousand pounds wouldn't be that tough on your ferris wheel setup either being its a center balanced axis that just needs rotating.If your system was balanced right a single 1hp geared motor would turn it, it would just be a matter of how fast or slow you need, 1rpm per minute would probably work well.

Hmm, I thought I posted here but oh well here goes again, I'm working on a system that uses a minimal of power to rotate through precision bearings and gravity. I just have to build the prototype and balance it. This new module will be outfitted in the north end of my new greenhouse, in front of the food wall. This module would grow an amazing 12 to 21 plants per square foot. I invite my friends at this site to join me and supply technical expertise that I so admittingly lack. I guarantee you will be credited. I don't care about that sort of thing, I just want to see my visions built.

BEAUTIFUL...This is exactly what I mean when I say "think outside the box".

 

Epcot has a much larger version I believe that is timed to capture the most amount of sunlight...naturally far more expensive. Carey my friend, you know, one of these days when I finally get my Rural Village Sustainability Venture started in India (I may start a smaller version here in Florida USA as the training ground), I am going to request a visit from you as well as scale drawings of such...if that is acceptable to you.

Thanks Miguel. That comes to only three plants per square foot instead of only one. I based this system in nominations of eight to appease Chinese superstition; which means fortune.

 

Haha. As far as electrical usage; Well lets just say this is for demonstration and not for power efficiency. They hooked up all eight hundred plants to a big-ol honkin (maybe) fifty horse motor. I have no idea what power consumption was. The sad thing is/ was; two million people saw this contraption but I didn't get even one referral.
