I am looking for work in the San Francisco Bay Area, or potentially abroad if the offer makes sense.  I am highly experienced in hydroponics and indoor/greenhouse gardening as well as having a Bay Friendly Landscaping certification (http://www.stopwaste.org/home/index.asp?page=188), years of experience in retail nursery and landscaping work.  I have designed, built, and run my own hydroponics systems for personal use, but have taken a great interest in developing skills specifically related to aquaponics.  As a young person (22 years old) I am increasingly aware of the need for local and sustainable food production, as well as using techniques like aquaponics to help disadvantaged people, or people with little land/resources, grow their own food to feed their family/community.  I am hoping to find some sort of paying position, so I can stop focusing on landscape maintenance and really be able to dedicate myself fully to aquaponics and developing related projects, although I am open to the idea of an internship if the job fits.  I am also open to traveling outside of my local area or even country for work/internship, again if the offer makes sense (Ive done a considerable amount of travel for my age and would love the chance to do more, particularly with work related to food production).  I've looked around and a lot of aquaponic farmers/companies want someone to pay them money to come and work for them, which for me is impossible as its incredibly difficult to survive in this economical climate even with an income.  I am a very passionate and committed individual looking for the right opportunity to not only break into the aquaponic world, but also help someone else's dream come to full fruition.   Please contact me if we sound like a good match! phone (best way to reach me) 4152602370 email: mattripley@gmail.com

I am very passionate about sustainable technologies and am interested in working in this field.   I live in Southern California (North of San Diego, South of Los Angeles).  If anyone knows of connections in this area, please share.

Cheers,

Hey everyone, I just graduated college and I need a little advice so I figured this would be a good place to look for some. This past semester I had an amazing learning experience in my adv. ecological design class with the John Todd. In this class, we broke down into groups and our semester long project for my group was to design an aquaculture business (system and business plan) that was sustainable and incorporated ecological design principles. Well, I stumbled upon the practice of aquaponics in no time. I learned a tremendous amount from reading Rebecca Nelson's Aquaponic Food Production book and looking through the forums on this site. I am so fascinated by this unique way of growing food. Now that I am out of school, I was wondering what I should do next. I would love to get actual hands-on experience working at a commercial aquaponics farm, but I definitely can't afford to pay for those internships that some of them offer. Does anyone know of a farmer looking for help where I won't have to pay to work? If not, what can I do next to move towards my ultimate goal of starting an aquaponics business? I am already working on a small system to play around with. Any suggested readings or whatnot? Your advice would be much appreciated! You can message me or send me an e-mail at tjmartin@uvm.edu .

Cheers,

Tyler

Gosh, it is exciting to think that Aquaponics is creating jobs!  The intern at Friendly's sounds like an awesome experience.  I wish I was a young college student again... I'd do it in a heartbeat.   However, I'm 43, I have a husband and two kids on the autistic spectrum, and I'm not sure they'd share in my enthusiasm for the duration of a 6 mo. intern., and it'd be too much of a commute from IL, me thinks.    But it sounds like an awesome experience, plus it's in Hawaii!   Are there threads or blogs anywhere here of people who have worked there, where they share their experiences?  I'd love to read about them.

The Friendlies and the person who wrote at least one of the negative reviews that you are referring to are all members of this site, so one option is to contact them through here.  I strongly encourage you to talk to multiple people before relying on any one source of information, whether that be a well-written website or a negative review.  There are usually many sides to every story...but you already knew that

Thanks for the quick reply Sylvia! I am located on Oahu and would prefer to stay here. I'd love to work with Olomana and plan on inquiring with them in the next few days. As far as Friendly, I basically read the entire website and was very impressed. The internship opportunity sounded ideal. However, after googling it, I came across multiple negative reviews of the experience. I know the internet can be an unreliable place so I'd like to get a contact number so I can decide for myself if it is something that it for me. Do you happen to have a contact for Friendly?

I haven't looked into Coastview very much. I believe it is also on the Big Island, in Kona.

Again, thank you so much for helping me out! This really is a wonderful site.

Kelsey

Kelsey, have you checked with the folks at Friendly Aquaponics?  They regularly take on interns.  You might also want to check with Chris Smith of Coastview Aqupaonics (he is a member here) who also has a small commercial operation in Hawaii...although I'm not sure what island.

I am seeking a job, internship or volunteer work on an aquaponics farm on the island of Oahu. I am 24 years old, studied at UHM, in strong physical condition and eager to learn in hopes of running my own commercial aquaponics system in Hawaii.

Aloha

I am looking for work in the Denver, Colorado metro area. Some of the services I provide include, but are not limited to, Aquaponic consulting, design, installation, greenhouse automation and online monitoring.  I can build custom web or windows applications to enable real-time integration with the greenhouse lighting, misting, temperature control and watering systems.  I have over 20 years engineering experience.  I am also an experienced aquaculturist and horticulturist using aquaponic and hydroponic systems.  These skills would enable me to see your vision and execute on time with quality in mind.

I hope someone out there has need of someone like myself :)  I am looking forward to moving to Denver!

Dirk - what you are offering sounds extremely tempting.  How much time do you think is going to be needed to get your system going well?  Must say you have me quite interested.
