Fish-less Systems

This is a group for people who have any kinds of fish-less systems, but yet are not doing classical hydroponics. Where we can share what we have come to find about making-home made nutrients, oganic-hydro, pee-ponics, worm tea hydro, bio-ponics, home-made buffers, water chemistry or anything else that is perhaps inappropriate for fish. As well as experimenting and sharing results for  things that might be alright for our aquatic critters.

Warning... Much of what may be contained here may, or may not be a good idea to apply to a system populated with living, breathing, happy fish, crustaceans or any other aquatic life. So be smart...

Brand new here. Got the link from Meir Lazar to join here. I am in the process of building my first system. For the past almost year I am looking, reading, watching just about every video and article…Continue

Some plants grow better in my raft, others in my flood and drain?

Started by Stacey King. Last reply by Stacey King Mar 24, 2015. 2 Replies

I'm running a humonia system. I have a system of 6 half barrels, at the first end are two raft barrels, the other four barrels are flood and drain. The pump runs to flood the beds 20 times per day,…Continue

Can nitrate water be stored?

Started by Gene Parbst Feb 1, 2015. 0 Replies

I started a 25 gallon fishless startup 12 days ago and the nitrates are coming up very nice.  When the ammonia and nitrite drop to 0ppm the nitrogen cycle will be complete.  After the nitrogen cycle…Continue

I didnt have much of a prob with fish emulsion and sprayers, I just learned I should run water through the sprayers once a month to keep them clean.

What does NFT stand for?

clogged sprayers are a joke with organic nutrients. It's a waste of time and money lol

I put full nutrients in my cloning system after the first roots sprout and then just treat it like a spray system and grow the plants out until they get too big. But with some cloning gel on the cut and a little cloning solution in the reservoir, I think fish emulsion would be a necessity.

The MASSIVE amount of O2 combined with the pertty good air to water ratio of hydroton probably help in the aeroponics system, if your desire is to clone as many plants as quickly as possible, I am convinced that aeroponics would be your best option. (You didn't ever mention what your intent was with the NFT). Dave you can build your own aero-systems that work well for pretty cheap. As with AP, there are lots of ways to go about it, but basically if you respect a couple of principals, you're good. Keep in mind though that aeroponic systems...hmm...how should I put it?... totally suck ass, when you are using organic nutrients. Its a total nightmare with the clogging pin sprayers/spray heads. This is a problem I've been working on for use in AP, but can't get around having to use metal parts...which are no good for the fish...

I got ya. That's odd that it wasn't working as well. Is the horizontal tube just NFT?

Comment by David Schwinghamer on February 28, 2012 at 1:47pm

With a cloning system do you use water or can you use fish emulsion instead?

Comment by David Schwinghamer on February 28, 2012 at 1:46pm

Essentially my fishless horizontal tube system wasnt performing like my spray system. People suggested I add a bio filter to my system like gravel in a bed. Then I said I want to go vertical and then there is more bio filter material to choose from for that.

esentially all cloning systems that you can buy pre-made are spray systems

I want to start cloning plants and thought the spray system would be best for that, what are your thoughts?

David,

I'm sorry, i'm not up to date on this convo. What problem is happening? in a vertical system?
