Here is the diagram of the bio-filter.

I have 3 clear panels spread over 24ft on the N side fish room. Subdued light but plenty to work by. I feel every creature deserves to know if it is day or night. Here you can see the panels on the roof during construction.

Any comments on keeping trout in the dark? Currently they are in my GH which I might reconfigure in the Spring. Can't see keeping the water below 72 any other (practical) way. Thinking of building onto shaded North side of GH. Would trout need/prefer a small window to know night/day?

I have bounced over a period of days, between 70 and 72F pretty much all summer long and I see no problems at all. Trout are hungry and healthy. When I do an IBC dump and refill during a harvest the makeup well water will drop it to around 68F. At 59F the bacteria in the system slow down and I have a harder time keeping the water clear.

Blue, There was a "warm water trout" thread a while back where one of the people posted a nice chart showing temperature vs growth rates for trout. 59 F sounds about right for the optimal growth rate. It might be worth searching for because there were some interesting comments about raising trout in water above 70 F.

Mission control....trout have landed! I have 50 5-6" (in 300 gallon) and 50 2-3" (in 100 gallon). 24 hours later and no DOA. Temp is fringing on 70F (peaked at 72 and I drained 25% and refilled from well...back down to 68). Glad I am not trying to figure this out in July/August. Thinking I need to reconfigure system in the Spring. I can add 3-4 IBC externally (in-line) and create a separate "fish-area" plumbed straight into GH. Thinking to frame, wall, and backfill with sand. I am on bedrock so can't use ground cooling. Nice thing is that the spot for this is shaded North side of GH. Summer is my only real temp concern up here in Maine.
My Question: light....better for the trout in the dark, semi-dark?
Next question: what temps have you pushed? My man from the hatcheries said 59F optimal with a +/- 10 swing. Wondering if everyone agrees or has additional insight.
