This last one is also interesting in the fact that they raise Jatropa plants which are somewhat aquaponically raised. These plants make a high grade of bio diesel. In fact they claim to get 830+ gallons of biofuel per acre of land.
This last link will send you Tilapia as long as you can prove your State will allow them.

I purchased my tillapia fingerlings from edgar sanchez at unlocksmith @tilapiafarmingathome.com
he sells breders and mixed sex fingerlings, nice guy his website is tilapia farming at home. He also offers a 75% discont on breeders if you are the first person to find out the rules for bring his type of tilapia into your state
I also purchased Blue Tilapia fingerlings from Rex his email is rrains@hotmail .com anouther nice guy usually has a ad on ebay.
In either case they were shipped via mail over several states I only lost one baby
I have breeders in the basment hopefully I will be having some for slae in the next couple of months pure strian blue and alsoT. hornorum X mossambica cross. This cross acording to what I have read shoud produce 98% male. This would be a a on a small scale.
Before you get any fish make sure you can have them where you live.
The U.S may be the home of the free but no when it comes to keeping tilapia.

Florida,
Many people catch blue tilapia in ponds and canals as far as a free source. If you would like to buy them, only place I know of without an aquaculture permit here is Morning Star Fishermen.
They can sell Blue Tilapia but they don't ship so you have to go visit, bring an ice chest or other tank and a bubbler for the drive. They were very nice and showed me how to check gender of the fish (once they are big enough.) I have never been to one of their classes or workshops though.

I had a power outage and lost 47 lbs of Tilapia to lack of oxygen. Are they still edible? If so how do I store them while waiting to fillet them? Seems like all the big ones died.Continue

Yeah, I separated the smallest guys from the brutes using a floating breeder box and am doing exactly that now.
@ Fishy - When I got me first fish I crushed the pellets to make sure everyone could eat it. I had similar situation, That is what my seller suggested to do. within a week or so they all could suck down at least one pellet.
@ Jon Parr: I don't believe water quality is the issue, I specifically put this tank together for fry/fingerlings. I have two sponge filters in the tank, each rated for 175% of the tank's capacity. The tank was already cycled and ready to go when my fingerlings were introduced (only thing in the tank). I have been checking, and logging, PH, Ammonia, Nitrates, and Temperature twice daily. I have a spray bar on my return line with a valve on it to regulate return flow, providing constant aeration. I'm guessing I received a handfull weak fish, or fish which were too small. I seperated out the tiniest guys last night and discovered that their mouths are too small for the starter food provided by the seller. The ones which were slightly larger are healty, eating voraciously, and I swear some have doubled in size since Friday. I'd rather not say who the seller was until I have resolved the issue with them.
@ Ken: that wasn't the exact one but contains the information I was seeking, thanks!
What is everyone's experience with fingerling survival rates? I got my fingerlings on Friday. Out of roughly 100, I lost 2 on day one, 2 on day two, 3 on day 3, and one on day 4 (thus far today). Honestly I have been able to predict the fatalities so far, a handful of my fingerlings looked kinda puny right from the start. PH holding steady @ 7.4, and water temps are consistently 80-82F. Another factor my be the variance in fish size in my shipment. My smallest guys were .5-.75" and my biggest are close to 2". Just curious what others have experienced when reviving fish in the mail.
I'd be interested in a chart like that too. I'm winging it a bit too much for my liking.
At some point I saw a document online outlining recommended feed regimens by protein content and feed per day (grams) based on fish life stage/size. Anyone know the paper I'm talking about?
Thanks Kellen. I am so excited! I already have at least 30 two pounders in the system as well that I intend to harvest in the Fall. They should be real tank busters by then. I took advantage of your 99 cent sale on Hawaiian Golds too. Sarah has me scheduled for shipping on Thursday for those. I'm thinking about getting some more Blues too since they are on sale as well. How long do you plan to have the sale?
Thanks for the mention Stephanie! Sarah showed me the pics you took of your tilapia harvest. Quite a few of those had to be pushing 4 pounds. Congrats! :)
