Anthony, The charr are a beautiful fish. I have built two systems. Because I was told by the aquaponics growers that our cool water would not work. I was told that at 45 degrees the whole thing would just shut down. Well I thought that was just a dumb thing to say and set out to show how dumb it was. I had to have a test system which is entirely in the greenhouse. Then I built another system which recirculates the water from my basement to the greenhouse. with the second system the water has a more constant temperature. 45-55 degrees perfect for the trout and lettuce does well all winter in this water. I can do basil in the summer and I am going to experiment this summer with tomatoes in a NFT/
for now my beds are all floating raft. I built the two systems as closely the same as possible. I built the fish tanks from cedar and lined them with a pond liner. Each tank is 250 gallons and the grow beds are made the same way those are also about 200 gallons.

Hello Maureen I joined this group for that reason, to find out how people are doing it. I like arctic charr they are a beautiful fish. I like the photo did you take it while mushroom hunting? How big is your system What are you using for fish tanks. And do you sell fish to market? I'm in the process of building my first system. The AP bug hit, now I'm gathering stuff I've drawn up plans picked up two 330 IBC totes (150each) a friend got me tree barrels found a source for pea gravel I think I have a buddy that said he has pvc pipe for me.

Hello Anthony, I have a system with Arctic Charr (trout family) for the same reasons you do. I think it interesting that our climate has so many advantages and so few who are testing these waters for aquaponics. I have a large system that recirculates from my basement to an outdoor green house. I'm in Port Angeles so we have very similar temps. So chat away.

Hello Just found you guys. I have been bitten buy the bug of AP and I live in Mountlake Terrace WA I'm just got two 330 ICB totes and Have drawn planes to build a greenhouse thinking trout for fish to keep heating cost down. Looking to see chat and converse the Western Washington growing.

I found a USDA microloan for new farmers which is for folks that can not get a commercial loan . I would like to convert my small house and daylight basemment over to aquaponics which would give me around 1500 sqft. The loan is for $35K and I have all the permits from the county.

I need a mentor with cultivation and sales/marketing experiance to move forward on the project.

Once I get one full production cycle under my belt, I can qualify for up to $300K. However, that second loan can not be used for building structures. So, I need to use the first loan for as much infrastructure as possible.

I have a broad background in technology and will need little help in that area. Yet, I will need pointers on the sales and marketing end. The mentors' work load will be minor for this project.

The funding starts next month and I just need to point to someone who has the exeriance that can meet the basic qualifications to file the paper work.

 

In the long run, I do hope that the aquaponics will produce around $800-$1K per month and be a center piece for my small campground. Regional Aquaponics Educational Center?

Sorry to hear of your difficulty Maureen.  What are you growing?  What is the media you are using in the pots in your rafts?

I have a new system (just over a month now). First my fish died. Which I expected. Now that the fish are fine, the plants are dying. The leaves start to turn brown on the edges and then the entire plant succumbs and dies. The Ph levels are stable at 7.1 the water temp. is 65 to 70 degrees. I have added some seaweed concentrate to the system, and had no change in death rate. I have posted a video and photos on my face book page at "This is Odd".
This is a lonely sad experiment. I am hoping that someone will comment and help me out. Someone not from a tropical area.
Today I am re-planting the three rafts with new plants again. Any Ideas?
