New IBC Grow Out Tanks

The barrels in the back of the 6-IBC grow out tanks are 2-media filters, 1 lava rock filter and on the extreme left, the sump.The large 1,000 tanks in the back are not currently in use.Continue

I want my farm to be somewhat diverse and not try to focus on one fish species. I do plan on doing some research to determine what fish would bring the best price in the region I am in. My point was that even if Tilapia is already prolific in the world market the local aqauponic market may still sell theirs at a higher price because of the quality and environmental reasons. The more folks associate aquaponics with environmentally friendliness then I think we begin to see more value in the produce and fish.
Aquaponics should be able to directly compete with the large farms and win due to it's built in cost savings.
So an aquaponic farm may offer the same tilapia in El Salvador for $1.50/lb but for the local El Salvador aquaponic farm it was cheaper to produce and get to market. They should be able to lower the price and capture more market. Am I nuts?

I am hoping the word "local" and the word "aquaponic" will affect the buying decisions of the consumers more and more. I think being able to offer local fresh tilapia vs frozen from walmart or sams club should command a different price. I would be willing to pay a little more for the local\fresh\organic. What do you think?
I know my choice but I am biased :P

I just saw this at our local Sam's Club...6lb Frozen Whole Black Tilapias packet for $11.98. Yes it is from China. That is less than $2.00 per pound!
Please do keep this in mind if you are considering using Tilapia as your fish of choice in any Aquaponic Commercial Business venture (even if American Grown). I would suggest that you consider other fish such as
Catfish, Trout, Perch or even some of the other "Niche" fish such as
Barramundi.
