Nitrite spike

Started by Bill Hider. Last reply by Casey Haas Jun 2, 2014. 10 Replies

I have since last Wed gotten a Nitrite spike, rising from less than .15 ppm to 3 ppm.  I think it may be due to over feeding, although I don't find much food residue on the bottom of the tank.  Not…Continue

Will catfish also eat duck weed as a supplement to commercial feeds?  THX

Ordering 30 or 40 new channel cats to pick up at the Slab Sale this Caturday... think I'll opt for the "6 to 8 inch" fingerlings (.90c) as opposed to the "4 to 6" (.70c) so less size difference to the first (June) batch.

Well fellow catfish huggers after a year and a month my system is through the fishless cycle and has its first wave of fingerlings. 60 channel cats this week and 140 next week. Wish me luck hehe.

I'm not sure if the 400 is the best but I've used it for the smaller fingerlings before.  Once they get past say 6 or 7 inches I would probably start shifting them over to the 4000.

Just wanted to get a pulse on the best catfish food for 2 to 4 in fingerlings. Is aquamax 400 the norm or is there something better out there. Availability or source would be a big help as well.

I just ordered 25 x 6 inch channel catfish fingerling from Dunn's Fish Farm. They had a website and their minimum order was 25 which is exactly how many i wanted for my 240 gallon system. I will let you know my experience for anyone else interested in getting small orders.

Well there will be some quality difference but I do know what the amount of bugs that can be fed to the fish this way is enough to make at least some difference in their diet.

Anything you can do to reduce the amount of commercial fish food needed for the fish will likely improve the Omega 3:6 ratios and so is probably worth more than just a money/electricity comparison.

As to a solar powered fan, well only if there is a battery involved since the bugs and light are definitely more effective after dusk. But yes I've heard of people shining a light and aiming a fan in such a way that as the bugs fly to the light they get hit by the moving air and are knocked down to the surface of the water where the fish can feast.

Definitely some good ideas flowing here.

Perhaps a small solar powered fan aimed down over the light would knock more bugs in?

OK, sounds like it was already a small niche industry then. Cool :) Well I would be curious to do some experiments on bug mass per hour vs energy cost vs equal amount of fishfood cost to make sure its worth it ;)
