I've currently 3 tilapia in a small starter system.  I'm looking to expand and would like to slowly add one/two different fish at a time (tilapia, channel cat, silver perch...).

Some members of the fish forums report being able to buy live fish from asian markets.  I asked the fish monger at the 99 Ranch in Fountain Valley, and was told that they cannot sell me live fish.  This seems peculiar, because they'll sell lobsters and crabs live.

I'm going to check other markets.  However, I not as enthused about the idea after seeing a dead tilapia floating in the tank at 99 Ranch.

I've got a fantastic tilapia supplier in Desert Hot Springs.  I don't know if he ships, since he's just a short drive from me, but I would suspect so.  He's got a HUGE facility.  And excellent prices.

The Tilapia Mama in San Diego sells and ships Tilapia (O. Mossambicus). Her website is: www.mybackyardfishfarm.com. She sells on ebay with the user name cooljewels. I plan on buying fish from her in about a month and will post back with how it went. If anyone knows of a source for around 50 channel catfish, please let me know. All I can find is www.proaqua.com, but their minimum order is $300.
Anyone know for sure about Tilapia north of Tehachapi's? I've read both....that O. Mossambicus is allowable by DF&G, and that "no" Tilapia north of Tehachapi's? What fish ARE good for Ca hot summer's yet cool winters? I have no idea where to even start for "fish". Thanks for any help!
Channel Catfish,Bullhead Catfish are great for California.

Is water temperature in the winter a problem for Tilapia?  Will I need to heat my tanks?

I was told the same thing for aquaculture for human consumption by the CA DFG. But having them as "pets" is a whole different story:)

Here is my E-mail from the DFG.

Hey Spencer....I'm south of you a couple hours and know a guy in Sacto too.  They'll definitely tell you Tilapia aren't allowed, I'm afraid.  Too bad, cause they need warm water, and we certainly don't have that here!
