Hay John,

To trouble shoot your system issues, you might be better off starting a discussion (just above the comment box here on the left is "add a discussion")

Then you can tell us all the details of your system

size fish tank

amount/type of fish

amount of grow bed

pumping cycle or type of flood and drain

amount of water you are pumping per hour

additional aeration

and water tests

pH

ammonia

nitrite

nitrate

temperatrue

what the suspended solids in your system are like (green, cloudy, just lots of fish poo?)

Those details will make it easier to figure out what to suggest to you.

John, does the pump run constant or on a timer... if its on a timer, you may need more run time. how many fish are in the tote?

I am concerned about the amount suspended solids in my system. Even at night with a flashlight, it is not possible to see the bottom of the IBC fish tank. The system is now 5 months old. The water from the FT flows through IBC gravel beds and then into a 4'x20' DWC before returning to the FT.

@Phil Slaton,
Sorry, I didn't mean for free, I'm just looking to buy a few trout. I'm just starting to plan my AP system and want to keep it small for now.

@Phil Slaton,
Are you looking to get rid of any trout? http://www.bkserv.net/images/Grin.gif

If you haven't yet started cycling and don't have any fish in yet.  You can use acid to bring the pH down a bit initially but I don't recommend doing it in a system with fish, bacteria or plants in it.  If you must use acid to adjust your source water, do it in a separate container, not in your system.  I have used muratic acid (hydrochloric acid) in the past.  I far prefer using rain water.

Derrick,

   I've done well by making a PVC frame and wrapping it with some 1/4" poly netting to contain smaller fish.  Pretty easy to do and some string and hooks to hold the cage in place is simple.  Cages that keep the fish from accessing the bottom of the tank can keep tilapia from breeding out of control.
