- I am the founder of a baby non-profit called CityBounty.org and we are planning to use rooftops all over Portland and Gresham to set up massive aquaponics bays that can grow food to supplement our emergency food system and also to sell at Farmers Markets to help support the non-profit. I am very excited to find this site and hope to learn a ton of info so we can make it work the first try. lol

We exist to start urban farms on vacant lots and aquaponics systems
in abandoned buildings in East Portland, Or communities
in order to provide fresh produce for the emergency food system.
We will use intensive farming, vertical gardening and aquaponic techniques to grow the
most food in the smallest space possible.
We will manage a hub farm with fruit trees, small fruits, herbs, and other perennials
and use it as a processing center for the project.
We will create a duplicatable model for other cities to follow in an effort to make a nationwide impact.

City Bounty Reborn

Well this time last year I was working on a new business called City Bounty and honestly not getting very far. I got busy with other life and shelved the whole thing due to discouragement and busyness. Now spring is back and my green thumb is itching again and I started dreaming again about what CityBounty.org was supposed to be about.
Then I saw a bunch of youtube videos about "vertical farms" and I am very excited about the possibilities.

There is a large vacant lot near my home and I have messaged the owner (over snail mail because she lives in Hawaii) to see if she will let CityBounty.org tend it for her this season. If she says yes we will be able to grow food on it to sell CSA style to get capital to start all of our projects and get our non profit status. It is a very exciting possibility.
So I am trying to think of the best way to grow food in that space. We could do traditional gardening but I don't have time…

We are just setting up a small solar greenhouse in the back yard that will be aquaponic. We have had a system running in the kitchen in southern windows and off a 60 gal aquarium that we have finally gotten up to road speed where we can now do tomatoes and cukes. This week end the grow beds and fish tanks get installed.

Hi Pam, thanks. my system has been running for 5 weeks now. 3 of those weeks were cycling without plants and the last two weeks have been running full speed with plants and fish together.
