I've noticed there has been much talk about trying to feed fish sustainably as well as trying to make them healthy to eat. I thought perhaps this warranted a group. Another point to keep in mind is that the fish feed in aquaponics is not simply a means to grow fish, it is also our primary means of getting proper nutrients to our plants so one can't really expect to remove fish and veggies from a system into which no external feed is added. If you will be removing fish and veggies to eat, you will have to replace the nutrients you take so you can't expect to grow all the fish feed in the system and still have much nutrient left over to provide veggie growth and fish harvest. (No perpetual motion machine.)
That said, there is much that can be recycled within an aquaponics system or if not directly, it might go through worm or bsf bins before coming back to the fish.

Was just told by my supplier that Purina is no longer producing Aquamax Dense 4000. Has anyone else heard this? What will you feed instead?

Try to keep it out of direct sunlight. I put mine in an IBC top and just put fish water in it for nutrients. No circulation or air.

Thanks for the data on the Koi food. I have chickens and had originally thought of the idea of Duckweed for them, then found that fish will eat it too. It may get too hot here for it to survive well but I am not deterred from giving it a try and the $5 I spent on it is worth the experience.

Sue, I have attached the labels for the food I use. Actually I use the smaller pellet yellow labeled stuff. This is Koi food and Koi enthusiasts are usually kinda particular what they feed their fish so I trust it. You can probably just use whatever your local Koi supplier sells and get good results. If you do grow duckweed it makes for a good protein supplement but isn't that critical unless you're looking for fast growth. I wouldn't put a lot of effort in the duckweed though.
Mind you I'm no expert but a hobbyist and have only been at this for about a year. A lot of what you read and see online are focused on maximum productivity of fish and plants. You have to decide what works for you.

Thanks Jeff for your input. I will be getting Talapia fingerlings. Right now I am in the city but when we move we will be somewhat remote and was hoping to have a backup plan.

Hi Jeff. Can you give me more info on your Koi food.. Brand etc. I presently have a 150 Gal FT with Shubunkin Goldfish. Only 10 for now to get my syst going. Everything is good so I'm thinking of adding Tilapia.

Also Sue, I found that Koi food from my local gardening /pond store works great for my Tilapia. 50 lbs./ $50.

@Sue, I have been trying to grow duckweed for about a year now. While it does grow it's not worth the effort for the results I get. I've tried several different methods and nothing produces the results everyone says you should get. If you can pick it up wild then that's probably your best option. The type of fish you use will determine the food you use and if you're growing plants the fish food will determine the types of plant nutrients you'll get. A lot of what you see here are people going for maximum results in their gardens which is good but I'm more of a set it and forget it kinda guy. Don't go too big to start. Baby steps. K.I.S.S.
