Need Help.

Hi to all.

I'm Nagaraj from India. I am very much interested in setting up a similar system here after seeing various presentations in different sites. Since I have not come across any person from India doing this, I am bit confused and hence the clarification. As of now I would like to set up a small unit in my backyard and then slowly move on to commercialisation of the system.

My question is why people in India have not started to adopt this system. Will the climate favour the system.

If this system will work here,( I live in Chennai,Southern part of India) then I need to know the following details so as to satisfy myself in boldly entering into this type of culture.

1. How to check the viability of the project,

2. The parameters to consider.

3. calculations for the size of pipes to go for, the motor capacity, the type of grow bed, etc...

 

Your early response will help me in deciding to venture into this new type of cultivation and excel in this field as all of you have already done.

1-Starting a small system in your back yard will help you learn and hopefully teach you some of the info you will need to figure out if it would be viable on a larger scale.

 

2-Temperatures/climate and if you are going to use a greenhouse.  What type of fish and what conditions they require.  Space you have to work with.  How many fish, how many plants.  Filtration needed for the amount of fish you want.  Electricity available for pumping and aeration.  Equipment available.  Containers available.  What type of system you like?  Media available if you plan a media system.  There is a rules of thumb document on this site that might help you understand some of these things better.

 

3-Calculating pipe and pump and grow beds as well as fish tank requires some information from you from number 2.  Pipe size is related to flow rates and pump size.  Pump size will be related to fish tank volume and how fast you need to move that water volume as well as how high you need to lift the water.  Grow bed size will be related to the size of the fish tank and amount of fish that require filtration.

There are many questions for you to answer, like......... elevation, temperature, what and how much crop,type of fish and fish food, what type of system(raft,media beds,NFT,etc.)but in the meantime you can read the Rules of Thumb on the main page, and as TC suggested and you can start with a small system like Barrel Ponics, see this link;   http://www.fastonline.org/content/view/15/29/

Nagaraj there are a number of Aquapons in India, in-fact we have at least three I know of on our site, one may even be near Chennai. Please look at the member map and I will try to post their details. I am sure they would be a great source of help.

 

As regards "why people in India have not started to adopt this system"...you, living in India should have that answer at your finger tips. It is only recently that certain parts of India and the population have achieved a sustainable and substantial economic growth cycle. The majority of the population still resides in villages (over 80% in M. Gandhi's days), where the benefits economic growth is only starting to trickle. The recent use of Solar has enabled a lot more of the village population to increase literacy levels as well as provide some desperately needed essentials. As the country progresses economically and the population becomes able to discriminate as to what they eat, so will begin the move towards Organic growing (as you may be reading now), and then toward other growing medias such as Aquaponics. Remember, this is not a "Cheap" system to start up and it does require uninterpreted power, something not available many parts of India.

Great points. Many on this forum may not be aware of the limiting constraints you mention here that faces other less developed countries, as i know only too well, coming from living in one.

Some one came to me not long ago asking about aquaponics for very remote villages where electrical power would probably not be an option.  They didn't really want to bring in alot of high tech stuff but they did want to help the people.

 

The people in the villages often already understand basic pond aquaculture so they can grow fish and that isn't a problem.

 

So instead of trying to convince them to take on technology that isn't appropriate to their situation, I recommended that composting and wicking beds might be far more useful.

I would like to sincerely thank you for helping me in giving me some idea to start with. The URL which you gave is a good eye opener as to the manual available in that site.
