Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

This is the place for comments on and any discussion of the "Rules of Thumb" document on the home page.

I can't promise that I'll make suggested changes - this has been through some strong vetting already - but I'm certainly open to hearing your thoughts and suggestions...or maybe just sharing that you find it useful!

I'm jealous of your 3000-4000 gallons of tank!

If I were you and had your size of tank, I'd be seriously tempted to buy me the 1000 male tilapia fingerlings package from Tilapia Fingerlings. You get the 1000 fish for only $405 ($275 + $130 S&H).

1000 itty fingerlings would be too little biomass at first, but once they grew to plate size, you'd be near or over your limit.

And at "about 99% male," you might be able to find the females and set up a breeding aquarium on the side. Not that I'd want to play around with sexing 1000 fish...

I hope I'm on the right page to ask this question.I'm getting ready to start my GH but I'm having trouble coming up with the numbers I need . 1)Size of fish tank to surface area of grow beds. 2)Pounds of fish to gallon of water. I'm new to this and want to use the smallest numbers to start and will work toward the maxiums later. My current plans consists of 2 fish tanks being 1570 gallons each or one fish tank being around 4200 gallons. I like the idea of two tanks better. It is amazing what some people have to work with.If you dont mind just give me some hard numbers to start with , thoses formulas blow my mind Thank in advance and I really enjoy this forum , it's been helpful and enlighting L F
meg: didn't mean to make you jelious or anything I'm just lazy and plan on using my trackloader to dig a pit before building a greenhouse over it. the machine is old and clumbsy and this is about as small as I can build it.Also I plan on using catfish as they are easy and cheap to get around here in the spring. But thanks for the advise all the same it was much appericated. Thanks again LF
Don't worry about making me jealous - LOL! Good luck with your system -

I am new here and just starting to figure out my first move, and advice on a very basic needs and some direction would be nice. A very DIY kind of builder.

Built my own 8 foot by 10 foot greenhouse to grow over the winter in a very cold climate with some success and hope to add aquaponics to the greenhouse for next year or over the summer.

You could start with a media system and expand from there.

thanks George, that my plan today.

I already have a small water pump using a 3/8 plastic line , for a 10 gallon tank will that work?????

Probably.  The general recommendation is that you filter the tank volume once per hour.

on a flood and drain can I flood even if it takes an hour to fill, and do that cycle once every 2 hours?

Using an example of a 10-gallon media-filled growbed, which should hold about 4 gallons of water, you would drain 2 to 3 times per hour to filter the volume of a 10-gallon tank once per hour.

Also, think about aeration - If aeration is supplied by the draining of your growbed, then you probably will want to cycle more than once every two hours.

Ok i get it, thanks George.

I am re-re doing my siphon down to a 1/2 inch line not a 3/4 i hope with that my pump might get it done and last until summer when i make plans for a larger system.

WIll post when I finish the starter project.

WHEN oh WHEN do I put in the plants and get thing going?

during cycling
