black algae

My tank is being over run with black algae. How can I get rid of it without harming the fish or the plants ???

any pic's?  how do you know it's algae? (i haven't seen black algae)

a common "fix" for algae is to cover the your ft to keep light from getting into the tank.. and add aeration if you don't have any

is it a thick layer of black algae looking substance? could be cyanobacteria. if this is then u will need to cut the light source from reaching the tank and water changes may be needed also try cutting the food down there may be a nutrient lockup in the system. possibly try adding more plants???

the best thing for this is american flag fish if its in a deep water culture or if its in a tilapia tank use highfin chineese alge eaters. those are the only 2 fish i know of that will touch the stuff. is it hairy or a film?

Not sure what Black Algae is but for the regular stuff I always recommend algae eating fish. I just went to the pet store and got one for $3-$4. Can't remember what they are called but they start at about 2 inches and grow to about 1 1/2 ft.
