Since it's tough to find barrels sometimes here in Hawaii. Has anyone ever used one of those thick rubbermaid trashcans before?
Are there pros and cons for using a trashcan rather than a barrel?

i've seen a few systems using them, but not up-close and personal.. i know they're quite a bit thinner than the blue barrels, but they seem to work ok vertically
Yes, the trash cans are quite a bit thinner and tend to bow out and warp when filled to the top with water. We've tried using them for rain barrels, but ended up switching them out for the 55 gallon drums.

No, I haven't. They look pretty sturdy :)

Alex, did you try the Rubbermaid cans?http://m.homedepot.com/p/Rubbermaid-Commercial-Products-BRUTE-32-ga...
Hello RK,
I am in Hawaii too. If you are on Oahu, you can find barrels at Homebrewinparadise in Mapunapuna. They discard their extract barrels, and Mike (owner) is cool if you take them. They need to be washed out well, but I have used them. Pretty strong.
