What is the best medium for a small indoor aquaponics system?

I am very new to this all, and I am in the process of putting together a system out of my 5 gal fish tank and I need to know what a good medium would be.

Hydroton is a excellent choice it is PH neutral, lightweight. It is a little on the pricey side but with a small indoor system it shouldn't take a lot.

where can I buy the hydroton?

I have started using lava rock, garden centres carry various kinds so be sure to test a sample before buying. The stuff I am using is called beachwood lava, it is light, about half the weight gravel and not as sharpe as some lava I have seen and about 1/10th the cost of hydroton.

I was really wanting to find something today so I can start my system running.

Check out Growstones which is a recycled glass product
