thanks! I am nothing if not groovey haha. How do you get around the issue of dirty gravel ? or do you just wash it thoroughly?

Yep...pain in the butt, but you only have to do it once. Or don't do it at all, some would say. It's up to you. I'm a washer (there's a shock) because I want to start my systems knowing what I've got as opposed to wondering if the dirt on the gravel introduced something later on. But some would say it just isn't worth the trouble (Murray Hallam, for example).
