Well I know there are many Australians that use what is called blue metal there.  I've never encountered such aggregate myself.  Find out if it is granite, if so it should be fine.

THE BEST ANSWER IS WHATEVER WORKS BEST FOR YOU.

 

In general, 10-12 inches is the most commonly recommended depth, but given the conditions for your local area, your systen setup, your system conditions, and the plants you are trying to grow, this can vary OR not matter at all (given a minimum depth).  General research is truly lacking in this area, unfortunately.
