Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

After a year of preparation, Solutions for Change will launch a social purpose commercial aquaponics operation in northern San Diego county. Phase One will be completed May 2012 and we anticipate our 2000 new Talapia friends swimming and our veggies growing within 45 days. Called 'Solutions Farms' this 20,000sf operation (all phases) will be a beta for additional aquaponic farms as part of a privately led nonprofit initiative called Finding Our Way Home. The purpose of the initiative is to solve family homelessness one family, one community at a time. Parents of homeless children will work the farm, grow food to feed their families, share the food with others but most importantly sell the food using a farm to table marketing strategy developed by Solutions for Change with area restaurants.

We will be bringing you more details in the weeks to come. We are excited and looking forward to sharing our knowledge and experience to help the aquaponics community. We are strong business minded social entrepreneurs with robust public and private sector financial backing but have much to learn. We hope to be of greater service to this community and ours.

Getting close to our first harvest of lettuce and basil!

The setup looks awesome!  I hope to get a tour someday soon.

FIRST HARVEST of the aquaponics Solutions Farms today! The families of Solutions for Change are sharing their first harvest with the community today. 400 heads of organically grown yummy leafy greens are being delivered to Taylor Made Golf cafeteria in appreciation for their employees and the hundreds of donated labor hours given to help us build the farms. @100 heads of lettuce are being shared with another homeless program - the Alpha Project-Casa Raphael guys. The rest will go to feed our own families and kids!

Parents enrolled in the Solutions University of Solutions for Change planted, grew and harvested this food themselves using aquaponics farming methods in San Diego’s largest commercial aquaponics farming operation. Solutions Farms is part of the Solutions for Change vision of solving family homelessness in North San Diego county, and beyond.

We will start distributing and selling our food to the local markets and restaurants very soon. TaylorMade Golf wants to be one of our customers!

Its great to see a commercial set up in San Diego running successfully. I would love to come by and have a look around, and pick your brain. San Diego is a great location for greenhouse growing and north county has a lot of unused run down greenhouses.
