I read a post, but did not follow it and now don't remember who posted it, about lowering the PH with oak leaves. My PH is running about 8.2-8.4. Tank is 180 gallons, how many oak leaves do you add and how long do you leave them in. I got the fact that you put them in nylons and hang tthem under the draining water.

Charlotte, I don't know what thread you read, but I know that at least Jon Parr is using Oak leaves to lower his system waters pH. Be aware that using any natural tannic acids will color your water dark (nothing to be concerned about, just be aware of that fact...some folks have trouble reading the results of their water parameter test colours is all)...

can some one tell me if it is dry oak leaves or green oak leaves that are used to lower the PH and about how much you use?

Hey Charlotte, oak leaves work ok. You will have to test how much to use, as individual chemistry and reasons for high pH will affect the results. I've used both green and dried, the green decay quicker, not sure why. Be warned that using enough to bring your pH down from 8.4 to 6.5 or so, will indeed turn the water black, damned near coffee black. Also you could use driftwood or peat. Haven't tried these, maybe I should.
