Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to all of this.  Iv'e been collecting materials for my first system and have found myself with a bit of a problem (a good one I hope).

I was planning on making my first system out of two 275 GL IBC tanks linked together, but have ended up with three.  Assuming a 75 gallon loss per container when I cut them up, that will be roughly 600 gallons of fish tank (effectively much less when you consider drain).

Currently I have a pump with a flow rate of 1052 GPH.

What should I be thinking about here?

I thank you in advance for your time.

What are your grow beds going to be?  Just the top 70 gallons of each tank?

Keep in mind that having 600 gallons of fish tank doesn't do you a whole lot of good if you only have 200 gallons of grow bed since you can only stock your system to the capacity of your filtration.

That 3rd IBC tank I would probably cut in half to make two deep grow beds to give you much more filtration so you would have the two shallow grow beds from the tops of the first two tank and then two deep grow beds from the 3rd tank cut in half which would give you closer to 400 gallons of grow bed.

That's exactly the kind of thing I needed to think about.

Thanks,

Ed

I don't know if you have already seen this, but there are some really excellent sources on the web for IBC aquaponics setups.  The first is the IBC of Aquaponics, and this is an absolutely excellent, downloadable step-by-step how-to-make resource which also then shows lots of members systems so that you can see what others are doing.  If you havent read it already then it is definitely worth a look:
