Another alternative to raising fish.

The marbled cray. I have a zillion cajillion of these guys. I use them for feeders. Never ate any but I don't see why you couldn't. They'll eat dead fish or vegetation. They reproduce by cloning themselves, so you don't need to buy a pair. I use frozen ones for bait. They are pretty invasive so I would only recommend them in tanks only not in ground ponds.

I think I will add that they should probably be kept in indoor tanks in climates where they could escape an outdoor tank and possibly make it to natural waters. As in anywhere in the South East USA where it is sometimes wet enough (say during a hurricane or tropical storm) that these creatures could go walkies and not dry to a crisp before perhaps being washed into a nearby lake and totally upsetting the natural balance of animals!

If using them as feed for your outdoor system fish, It would be proper to make sure they are dead before feeding.

Anyway, so how big do these crayfish get?

They are pretty small. About 3 inches.
