It is my understanding that it is the sand and rock the absorb the heat and store it ..... the clay and straw are only binding agents.

I made the mistake of surrounding my exit pipes with sand and rock.  I discovered that sand is an insulator and the air in between the rock is an insulator.  I have removed that sand and rock and have to surround the pipe with cob so the heat can be absorbed by it.  So for now I burn for around 2-3 hours at night and then run a small buddy heater on low on cold nights.  Once the cob bench is done I shouldn't have to run the buddy heater.
