Solar DC or AC powered pumping system ...

Ran into a snag today ... determining the proper pumping system needed for our set up.

I really wanted to use solar power to run my system but have been advised not to, because there is not enough flow rate or head height.

My concern is when the power goes out? What then? With solar this is or no concern. So my search continues on this quest.

George ... how big of an aquaponic system do you have?

My system runs 24/7 from solar - three 295 watt panels, two AGM 12-volt batteries and an inverter.  I hope that if power goes out, all will run as usual.

I am still in the research phase of my aquaponics system but I think the way to go would be an AC powered pumping system for a main pump and a DC powered bilge pump as a backup.  This backup would only come on in the case of a power outage to to aerate and circulate the water for the fish tank so the fish don't die.  During the outage the grow beds will not get water, but in my opinion this is much less devastating than loosing the fish in your system.  A solar panel could be used to keep the backup battery fully charged and ready in case of a power outage.  The article below goes into more detail.
