Aloha Melissa my name is Raychel and I am from Hawaii but my son is from Antioch TN.
I use white barrels a lot. They are very good and as you said cheap. My whole purpose is cheap but good. There is a clear substance that paints on and sticks to plastic and then you can paint over it. All you need to do is put something on so the sun can not shine through to the water. Because barrels are not to large I would not suggest black paint. I will try to find out the name of the clear substance. Good luck and use the barrels.
