We started cycling on April 14th with 55 tilapia fingerlings in 650 gallon fish tank. We reduced the water to about 150 gallons to accumulate solids and raise the concentration of nutrients to the plants. We added 40 bigger tilapia (6") on the 27th, increased water to 250 gallons and added 500 gallons of raft bed, then we had a huge growth spike on May 4th. So, I would say we are fully cycled now.

Re: cycling with pond water-- I would say off-hand that the concentration of nutrient would be too low to create lots of growth. You need to stock your fish in a good balance of water- 1:10 or 1:5. I'm thinking we're right around 1:7 right now and it's working very well. Keeping the nutrient level high enough for the plants is what you're after.

Hi Tom, I bought the solar pump and panel kit on Ebay. Search "Solar Power Water Pump 8 Watts with Battery & Timer" in Ebay and you'll find a few sellers there. I've purchased 3 different kits and they each have different branding on them because I think they are all just from China. Hi Tom,

It sounds like a good plan. That size GH is a good size for a small barrel system. With perch watch out for over heating. They like 65 to 75 deg. water. Keep the tank shaded for algae temp buildup. Insulate the tank if possible.

When I change the plastic on my GH, I'm going to add roll-up sides and automatic top vents. I have more trouble with summer temp. then winter with the fish.

I have some questions for you. Where do you want to go with this? What do you want to  with this project? Small hobby, family food production, small business? Do you have your own place? How much land do you have? City or country? Good neighbors?

  The 300 gal. Rubbermaid is good.

  My system has been up about 18 mo. The perch are doing fine. The 23 fish is fine for a small bed system. More fish more beds. I had 125 adult perch in a 300 gal tote (IBC).

  I know my answers sound cryptic, I'll explain more when I get back from work.

Hi Tom,

Don't know where to start.

I have found yellow perch do not like square tanks. They are schoolers. They do better in round or rectangular tanks. they will go around and around. Tilapia and blue gill will go up and down in the column of water. Perch will usually stay on the bottom.
