Are you an aquaponic gardener already?
trying to start
If so, what type of system? (pick all that apply)
Plan to use hydroton w/ 2 grow beds & 1 large plastic fish barrel for tilapia. Starting seedlings today. As I understand it I have to have everything set up in Florida, get inspected, then I can purchase fish. I have tried to find every web site and looked at MANY Utube videos. Any advise would be appreciated.
Please tell us something else about yourself.
I am a nurse w/ 12 yr old daughter who is as excited as I am and a husband who is not excited but willing to help w/ the plumbing and pumps. I think he'll catch the fever.

The Giant Tiger Prawns are definitely exotic and require lots of space per creature. I understand that Friendlies did try it for a while but didn't find them very cost wise for their situation.
Catfish are great, easy, and being native and climate appropriate there seems to be little reason not to grow them unless your religion has something against fish without scales. (And many who might find wild caught catfish unclean, find that aquaponic catfish are very good.)
You can get blue tilapia from Morning star but you have to do it in person and have a container and aerator to get them home since they are not set up to ship or bag with oxygen or anything like that.
I actually like catfish better since you don't have to worry about keeping them warm and they grow bigger fast in my experience.
Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community! I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics. There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions. Everyone is quite happy to help out new members – no question is too basic.
A great place to start is to read the How to Use This Site link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Main page.
Please participate!
As a side note, I started the same way you are, but it was my 13 year old son at the time. My husband, who started with us by being the plumber, is now my business parter in our aquaponics business. They do come around eventually ;-)
Thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to getting to know you.
