I am a Hydroponics vegetable grower and would like to integrate hydroponics to aquaculture to grow organic food. Now I am experimenting at a homemade flood and drain aquaponics system to get some experience and practical knowledge before expanding to a commercial Aquaponics Farm.

An update to my AP system: it's been almost 6 months since I established my system, I see alot of improvements in plant growth as well as the fish. So far I was successful in growing lettuce, pepper cress, green beans and tomatoes. I am experimenting now on growing cucumbers. My AP system is still used for experimental purposes, it is located oudoors on my south East balcony in Santa Barbara area, Southern California, unfortunately it is illegal to grow tilapia here, so I am growing goldfish…

My Terrace Aquaponics System

I recently built a simple homemade Aquaponic System, it is flood and drain type, the growing bed "GB" is filled with gravels.GB is connected to the fish tank "FT", the later has a submersing pump on a timer. Water is pumped from the fish tank to the grow bed every half an hour and stays there for half an hour, then by gravity it goes back to FT when the timer goes off. Now I am cycling the system by adding small amount of fish food every day as a source of ammonia to encourage the…

Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community!  I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics.  There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions.  Everyone is quite happy to help out new members – no question is too basic.  


A great place to start is to read the “How to Use This Site” link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Home page.  You might also find the “Aquaponic Gardening Rules of Thumb” guidelines helpful.
