Hi Howard,  sorry took so long to reply..

I too are fairly new at this.. been about a year now and this has only cost me money..

Friday morning I awoke to find all my fish dead and floating.. very fustrating..

besides that my main poblems have been with powdery mildew on my plants.. from the humidity i suppose.. I would be happy to show you my system.. I am cleaning it out this weekend and debating if i should continue or scrap the project..

I believe my problems with the fish have come from the filter systems.. I have tried so many types and am at a loss..

Hi Howard, I've got several systems now out under the elements and I've never messed with fans or misters.  My 300 gallon system has a little bit of Aluminet 40% shade cloth over it for the summer and the fish tank has a more substantial shade roof over it just to help keep the temperatures from swinging as much but I'm doing nothing else to protect from heat.

Planting for the seasons and having an appropriate fish for the climate are the best advice I can give.  (In a flood and drain media system outdoors even in Ft Lauderdale it might get a little chilly during a cold winter for tilapia but catfish or bluegill should be fine with the full range of temperatures.)

This comment is getting a bit long so you may wish to send a message to me or start a thread in the Florida group.
