The sand bed is an "auxillary bed" in that it is fed from a sump next to the FT, and is flooded only a few times a day, thus do not play a massive role in bio-filtration (which is done by three other identical beds).  It is about 10 inches deep, with the gravel about two of those.  I want to experiment with this as an alternative to a wicking bed, and grow root crops if possible.  I am looking for something that will do onions, beets and carrots, and hydroton is just far too expensive here.

Kobus great work. Really like the perforated pipe at the bottom to assist in water movement to the drain. How deep is the gravel and sand overall. Again keep us posted. Really curious as to how this works for you.
