On basil it is a compromise.  It is my home system, thus I only let the basil get to a size that does not cause a problem before I cut them back.  That point is much smaller than what a commercial system will desire, but it is fine for me.  There is no media - just a clear flow-through pipe.  The plants are potted in vermiculite or fine gravel.

the spacing in this pic looks a little close for basil..my basil plants got huge and bushy before the freeze got them.

ok, now I see the other response you were referring to, thanks for you reply..oh, didn't realize it is 4", looks smaller. I have tons of 4" that I was thinking of using.

That is a 110 mm (4.33 inch) diameter pipe typically used here as a drainage pipe.  I have had cut flower seedlings and Basil in it since I put the pipe in place, and thus far, no clogging.

Hello, what size pipe is that? What are you planning to grow in them and won't the roots clog it up?
